Oat and Date Crumble Slice

The fasting month that is also known as month of Ramadhan in the Islamic Calendar almost arrive to the end, and very soon the 'victory day' Idul Fitri will be celebrated by all Muslim around the world.

Living in the capital city of the most populous Muslim country in the world, all the Jakartans can feel the difference between normal days and the days during Ramadhan.
Some important aspects of our daily life are effected, from the time activities (office and school hour), traffic, and also the price of the raw food (especially meat are on the highest price during this time).

After all, for me it's once a year tradition. And now, I'm so ready to enjoy this city with my family during Idul Fitri, since almost half of Jakartans join the annual mass exodus. This exodus tradition (known as Mudik) that is very famous in this country, when millions of Indonesians leave the cities where they work / live to return to their village / hometown to celebrate Idul Fitri with their relatives.

So, if you want to enjoy Jakarta peacefully, less traffic, less pollution,... now is the perfect time!

One thing that interesting to be enjoyed during the month of Ramadhan is the staple fruit of the Middle East; Dates (Arabic: Qorma, Indonesian language: kurma). Most of the supermarket in Jakarta is currently being flooded by many types of dates.
If you wonder why dates are popular during Ramadhan, you can read the good explanation here. Interesting to know about that.

Since it's very easy and cheap to buy this fruit at this time, I decided to bake this 'cake' that actually  is familiar for me, because my mom used to bake this 'cake' for us many times.
I just needed to reduce the amount of sugar because the dates that I bought is sweet already.
I like the clever combination between the coarse crunchy texture of the crumbs and the gluey soft date paste. Also the flavor is perfectly match, tasty combination of brown sugar, butter, and oat sandwich the sweet dates with the hint of lime paste.
My son calls it, Heavenly Cake.

Oat and Date Crumble Slice
Source : Superb Slices by Periplus
Ingredients
370 gr chopped dates
90 gr caster sugar (I used only 50 gr)
1 tsp grated lemon rind (I used grated lime rind)

Wholemeal Crumble :
185 gr butter
230 gr soft brown sugar (I used 200 gr palm sugar)
125 gr plain flour
110 gr wholemeal plain flour
1/2 tsp bicarbonate of soda ~baking soda
150 gr rolled oats
caster sugar, to sprinkle

1. Line a lightly greased, 18x28cm (7x11 inch) shallow tin with non stick baking paper, overhanging two opposite sides. Preheat the oven to moderate 180C (350F)

2. Put the dates, sugar and lemon rind in a pan with 1 cup (250 ml) water and stir over low heat for 12-15 minutes, or until the liquid evaporates and the dates are soft. Leave to cool.

3. To make the wholemeal crumble, beat the butter and sugar with electric beaters until pale and creamy. Sift the flours and bicarbonate of soda into the butter mixture with the rolled oats and mix well.

4. Press half the crumble into the pan. Spread the date filling on top, then sprinkle with the remaining crumble for 40-45 minutes, or until golden brown. Sprinkle with caster sugar while hot. Cool in the tin for 20 minutes, before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
